Why winter leaves Australian skin looking dull - and what genuinely helps

If your skin looks flatter and less radiant now that it is winter, there is a real reason behind it - and knowing that reason makes the fix far less confusing.

Why winter does this

Dullness and dehydration tend to happen when the skin's surface is congested with dead cells, the barrier is compromised, or the skin is simply lacking water. Winter pushes all three along. Cold outdoor air holds less moisture, indoor heating holds even less, and hot showers and wind add to the load. The skin loses water to that dry environment faster than usual, and the look that follows is tired, flat and a little lacklustre.

One distinction worth holding onto: dry skin lacks oil, while dehydrated skin lacks water - and either can leave the complexion looking dull. Winter most often brings on the dehydrated, flat look, even for people who have never thought of themselves as a dry skin type.

What actually helps

The honest answer is consistency rather than a single product:

  • Protect the barrier. Choose a gentler cleanser through the cold months and seal moisture in while skin is still slightly damp.
  • Keep hydrating. A richer night routine matters more when the air is dry.
  • Do not skip SPF. UV still reaches your skin on grey winter days.
  • Support renewal gently. When skin is congested and dull, considered in-clinic resurfacing such as a chemical peel can encourage fresher-looking skin to surface - tailored to your skin, never one-size-fits-all.

Glow comes from healthy, well-supported skin, so the focus stays on looking after the barrier through the season rather than chasing a quick result.

If winter has left your skin looking dull and dehydrated and you are not sure where to start, the clearest next step is a proper look at your skin in person. Jane, a Registered Nurse, assesses your skin honestly and builds a plan suited to you and the season.
