The winter UV you never feel is the one that keeps pigment coming back

The winter UV you never feel is the one that keeps pigment coming back

If you have quietly let SPF slide now that the burning heat of summer has gone, pigmentation is the exact concern that notices. The sun does not switch off in winter - it changes character, and the part that fades is not the part that drives uneven tone.

Two kinds of UV, two different jobs

Sunlight reaches your skin as two types of UV. One is the burning wavelength - it is far stronger in an Australian summer and drops noticeably in the cooler months, which is why you stop feeling that sting on your skin. The other is the wavelength most tied to pigmentation, and it stays far more constant across the year. It also passes through cloud and through ordinary window glass - so the daily walk, the drive to work and the seat by the office window all still count.

That is the catch with pigmentation. The UV you can feel eases off in winter. The UV that keeps melanin firing does not.

Why this matters for a plan

At Aesthetics by Jane, pigmentation is approached as something managed and maintained rather than permanently cured - a layered plan of gentle in-clinic resurfacing and a tailored home regimen, paired with daily sun protection. Skip that protection through winter and you are renewing skin while it is still being re-triggered by light you never notice.

Considered resurfacing such as a chemical peel can support a brighter, more even-looking complexion - but it works best alongside year-round SPF, not instead of it.

So winter is not a reason to ease off. If anything it is the quieter half of the year when consistency does the most for pigmentation and sun damage.
